Song of the Day 1/21/09

Every day, our top 666 songs of alltime countdown gets one step closer to #1. Wednesday’s is #553:

John Lennon – Working Class Hero

You probably know this one, Lennon at his most tersely visionary: a stinging, minor-key acoustic broadside from a guy who always had an uneasy relationship with his blue-collar roots: “You’re all just fucking peasants as far as I can see.”

Available wherever mp3s are traded.

  1. Not that I’m necessarily making it, but if *someone* were to make the argument that Lennon had been an arrogant son of a bitch, this is where they’d begin to assemble the argument.

The last line, “If you want to be a hero well just follow me”
is a masterwork of irony spinning back through guilelessness, back again to irony. Lennon gets to take credit for the clever way in which he pokes fun at the relationship between Beatle and Stargazer while simultaneously stroking his own activist ego.

Neat trick, great freaking song coz of its transparency.
